PRESS RELEASE
Issue Date 17th April 2010
Hamburg Süd boosts fleet with new Daikin container refrigeration units

Global reefer container carrier takes delivery of 2,000 more Daikin
container refrigeration machines

Hamburg Süd, a leading player in the global maritime transport of temperature-controlled cargo, has recently taken two large deliveries for a total of 2,000 new Daikin Reefer container refrigeration units. A first order for 1,000 units, placed in October 2009, was followed this February by a second order for a further 1,000 machines.

Hamburg Süd have placed several large orders of Daikin LXE10E units over the last five years and now have a significant portion of their fleet made up of Daikin units. Its latest orders were built at Daikin’s state-of-the-art production facility in China, which opened late 2008.
The German-headquartered ocean carrier says that reduced ownership costs, energy savings and precision of temperature control were key factors in its decision to invest in the new equipment.

“Our decision to purchase these latest Daikin LXE 10E refrigeration units was triggered by a number of key reasons,” said Martin Schoeler, Deputy Director Logistics Technology for Hamburg Süd. “This includes the fact that the total cost of ownership of the LXE10E units has been improved significantly with the introduction of Daikin’s energy management software solution, DTMS.”

To support Hamburg Süd with its expertise in the reefer market, the Daikin refrigeration units will provide the precise temperature control required by the company’s customers, one of the lowest power consumptions available in the market and the excellent reliability that operators have come to expect from Daikin. Hamburg Süd are also benefiting from their decision to retrofit Daikin’s energy-reducing software DTMS across their existing Daikin fleet, lowering fuel consumption and improving performance of the older fleet bringing it to an equal level with new machines.

News Release

Since its foundation in 1871, Hamburg Süd has evolved into a worldwide logistics and ocean transport organization dedicated to providing customers with tailor-made transport solutions. Today, refrigerated cargo is one of the most important commodity groups carried on the company’s container vessels worldwide and it has been
consistently at the forefront of research and new technology developments.

“We are delighted to receive this significant additional business from Hamburg Süd,” says David Marjoram, General Manager Refrigeration Business Unit for ITOCHU Europe plc, Daikin’s global sales agent. “The market for new reefer equipment was hit hard last year by the global downturn. However, the continued confidence of longstanding customers such as Hamburg Süd helped Daikin retain its ranking as the
second largest supplier to the global refrigerated container industry.”

PRESS RELEASE

Issue date: 19th May 2008

Daikin launches second generation power saving software

Container refrigeration machinery manufacturer Daikin is launching DTMS2, the second generation version of its intelligent temperature management software. The Japanese headquartered company, which now has over 100,000 of its LXE10E scroll compressor reefer machines operating in the field, says that the new software will provide the lowest power consumption unit on the market today.

There are now 42,000 Daikin units in operation fitted with the original DTMS software, which was introduced at the end of 2005 to simultaneously reduce power consumption and improve carrying conditions for chilled cargoes. The DTMS control logic continually monitors both supply-air and return-air temperatures, together with their rate of change, and automatically adjusts the operation of the refrigeration unit based on these three parameters.

Daikin says that this continual fine tuning enables temperature and airflow inside the container to be controlled with much greater accuracy, as the system responds to real time conditions. As a result, power consumption is reduced by up to 50% compared to a standard refrigeration unit.

The latest upgrade will provide further reductions in power consumption and can also be used in both chilled and frozen operations. From the second quarter of 2008, DTMS 2 will be available both for new and existing machines, ensuring that users of Daikin equipment can adopt the new technology across their entire fleets.

Daikin says that the development of DTMS2 meets current industry demands for reduced energy consumption both for cost and environmental reasons, while maintaining accepted industry standards in cargo temperature control.

Tests of DTMS 2 undertaken at Cambridge Refrigeration Technology (CRT) on a 40ft high-cube container showed that internal container temperatures were maintained as normal in a range of refrigeration scenarios. Feedback so far indicates a keen interest for clients to trial DTMS 2 as soon as it is launched.

Daikin has established a new company, Daikin Refrigeration (Suzhou) Co. to manufacture refrigeration units used in seagoing reefer container transport.

Over the last five years, our market share has grown steadily from 5% to 26%. This growth in market share, along with increased global demand has created a need for additional capacity.

To meet this extra capacity, Daikin Industries, Ltd. has established a new company, Daikin Refrigeration (Suzhou) Co., Ltd in Suzhou Industrial Park, Suzhou, China, which will manufacture the refrigeration units. Established with ¥1.39 billion capital (US$ 12.1 million), mass production is scheduled to begin in October 2008 with a capacity of approximately 40,000 units targeted for 2010.

With the world’s container box producers concentrated in China, establishing the new 21,000 sq m reefer factory locally moves production closer to box manufacturers and allows a rapid response to rising demand. The location will shorten delivery times, enabling us to ship units to Shanghai in as little as 2 days and Qingdao in 5 days – an improvement on shipping times from Japan, which take 10-14 days.

The current Japanese production base in Osaka has an annual manufacturing capacity of 30,000 units. Production will be transferred gradually to the new Chinese company with the combined annual production of both bases supplying world wide markets, set to reach 70,000 units by 2010. In addition, all main parts will be produced in-house, ensuring high quality and shortening lead-time from production to product completion from 17 to 9 days.

For the past ten years Daikin have operated five production plants in China for their air conditioning division and therefore have extensive experience in producing high quality products locally. We will build on this experience to ensure that the reefer products built in China meet the same exacting standards.

In this fast-moving world market, customers rightly expect the highest quality products coupled with fast, efficient delivery and these are two areas where Daikin will continually strive to lead the market.

Daikin celebrates milestone orders

Daikin, the Japanese-headquartered manufacturer of container refrigeration machinery, has recently celebrated three significant milestones: the delivery of its 70,000th LXE10E scroll compressor unit, its first major leasing order and the first customer for units fitted with the Daikin Temperature Management System.

Daikin, the second largest supplier of machinery to the global reefer container industry, delivered its 70,000th LXE10E scroll unit this July. The unit was part of a batch ordered by a major global carrier.

In the same month, the company also secured its first business with Carlisle Leasing International, the largest reefer container leasing company in the world. Carlisle ordered 1,450 Daikin LXE10E scroll compressor units for use on newbuild reefer boxes under production by CIMC in China. The order was due to be completed by the end of August.

The majority of the new equipment is destined for use on reefer boxes to be leased by a major Japanese shipping line. The carrier already equips much of its owned reefer equipment fleet with Daikin refrigeration units and, thanks to this move, can also now lease boxes fitted with its preferred machine.

Established in 1993, Carlisle is the only major international leasing company to focus on refrigerated containers and related equipment. The company says that the Daikin transaction is “consistent with our ongoing focus upon providing refrigerated leasing solutions in response to our customers’ requirements.”

The leasing sector accounts for some 20-30% of the reefer machinery market worldwide and Daikin is delighted to have secured the world’s leading lessor of refrigerated containers as its first major customer in this sector. Daikin expects this development to be repeated by other reefer leasing companies, allowing the company to even up the competitive playing field among suppliers to the leasing sector and provide more choice in the refrigerated container market.

In May, Royal Arctic Line A/S became the first customer for the Daikin Temperature Management System (DTMS), when it acquired 125 units equipped with the innovative system.

Developed for use with the LXE10E unit and officially unveiled at last year’s Intermodal show, DTMS is a new type of control logic that significantly improves refrigeration performance by continually monitoring both supply-air and return-air temperatures, together with their rate of change. The real time monitoring and adjustment ensures that machines operate at optimum efficiency, reducing power consumption by 25-50% compared to a standard refrigeration unit. DTMS also improves conditions for chilled cargo carriage, particularly in reducing produce dehydration.

“We are using DTMS when we ship fresh vegetable from Denmark to Greenland, and between 13 different terminals in Greenland, and can therefore save power without sacrificing the quality of the commodity,” explains Jens Nielsen, Technical Manager for Royal Arctic Line.
A number of other shipping lines in Asia and Europe are now finalising their own DTMS trials and Daikin reports that these in-house tests have confirmed 25% – 50% reduction in power consumption.

Daikin reduces power consumption for refrigerated transport containers with innovative Temperature Management System

Daikin, the Japanese-headquartered manufacturer of air conditioning and refrigeration systems, has introduced an innovative new product that reduces the power consumption of its refrigeration machinery for transport containers, while simultaneously improving carrying conditions for chilled cargo.

The Daikin Temperature Management System (DTMS) was officially launched on 8 November at the ITL2005 Conference & Exhibition in Bilbao. Developed for use with Daikin’s LXE10E scroll compressor machine, DTMS is a new type of control logic that significantly improves refrigeration performance by continually monitoring both supply-air and return-air temperatures, together with their rate of change. According to Daikin, DTMS is the only product on the market to monitor all three of these parameters.

DTMS works by automatically adjusting the operation of the refrigeration unit based on varying ambient conditions and cargo respiration rates while the container is in transit. This continual fine tuning enables temperature and airflow inside the container to be controlled with much greater accuracy, as the system responds to real time conditions.

The real time monitoring and adjustment ensures that the refrigeration unit operates at optimum efficiency, using the minimum amount of power. Tests conducted at three separate research sites demonstrate that DTMS reduces power consumption by a massive 25-50% compared to a standard refrigeration unit.

As a result, says Daikin, DTMS will further reduce the life cycle operating costs for container shipping lines using its LXE10E scroll machine. Using the new system, carriers can expect to save between US$100 and US$400 per year in fuel costs.

DTMS also has benefits for chilled cargo condition, particularly in reducing produce dehydration. The continual monitoring of supply-air and return-air gives a clear picture of cargo respiration rates, with fan speeds adjusted automatically based on real conditions. As a result, less air is blown across the cargo, thereby reducing moisture loss. This benefit of DTMS is particularly valuable for perishable produce with high water content, such as bananas, peaches and melons.

Users can manually activate the system during configuration of the refrigeration unit. Alternatively, DTMS can be activated automatically when a chilled set point is selected by the operator, or when a set-point in a specific chilled temperature range is selected.

Following extensive in-house tests, DTMS is currently undergoing pilot trials with major global container shipping lines. The new control system will be an optional extra for users of Daikin’s LX10E scroll compressor machine, although Daikin expects the majority of its customers to take up the option. DTMS can also be retrofitted to existing machines, allowing current customers to obtain the benefits with their complete Daikin fleet.

Launched in 2001, the LX10E has helped Daikin to achieve a dramatic increase in global sales and market share. Over the past four years, the number of shipping lines purchasing Daikin reefer machines has increased from 4 to 36 , including 14 of the top 22 ocean carriers. In the same period, annual sales have grown from below 5,000 units to an expected figure of more than 20,000 units in 2005.

Daikin is now the second largest supplier of container refrigeration machinery worldwide, with a market share in excess of 25%. It is also the major supplier of scroll compressor units for the reefer container market, with more than 45% of this market.

The company says that the scroll compressor is fast becoming the preferred choice in the market due to its high quality, reliability and performance. In 2005, over half of all reefer machines purchased were fitted with scroll compressors. Scroll compressor units now make up around 19% of the global fleet of container refrigeration machines, and Daikin expects this to rise to nearly 50% by 2009.
