Global reefer container carrier takes delivery of 2,000 more Daikin
container refrigeration machines

Hamburg Süd, a leading player in the global maritime transport of temperature-controlled cargo, has recently taken two large deliveries for a total of 2,000 new Daikin Reefer container refrigeration units. A first order for 1,000 units, placed in October 2009, was followed this February by a second order for a further 1,000 machines.

Hamburg Süd have placed several large orders of Daikin LXE10E units over the last five years and now have a significant portion of their fleet made up of Daikin units. Its latest orders were built at Daikin’s state-of-the-art production facility in China, which opened late 2008.
The German-headquartered ocean carrier says that reduced ownership costs, energy savings and precision of temperature control were key factors in its decision to invest in the new equipment.

“Our decision to purchase these latest Daikin LXE 10E refrigeration units was triggered by a number of key reasons,” said Martin Schoeler, Deputy Director Logistics Technology for Hamburg Süd. “This includes the fact that the total cost of ownership of the LXE10E units has been improved significantly with the introduction of Daikin’s energy management software solution, DTMS.”

To support Hamburg Süd with its expertise in the reefer market, the Daikin refrigeration units will provide the precise temperature control required by the company’s customers, one of the lowest power consumptions available in the market and the excellent reliability that operators have come to expect from Daikin. Hamburg Süd are also benefiting from their decision to retrofit Daikin’s energy-reducing software DTMS across their existing Daikin fleet, lowering fuel consumption and improving performance of the older fleet bringing it to an equal level with new machines.

News Release

Since its foundation in 1871, Hamburg Süd has evolved into a worldwide logistics and ocean transport organization dedicated to providing customers with tailor-made transport solutions. Today, refrigerated cargo is one of the most important commodity groups carried on the company’s container vessels worldwide and it has been
consistently at the forefront of research and new technology developments.

“We are delighted to receive this significant additional business from Hamburg Süd,” says David Marjoram, General Manager Refrigeration Business Unit for ITOCHU Europe plc, Daikin’s global sales agent. “The market for new reefer equipment was hit hard last year by the global downturn. However, the continued confidence of longstanding customers such as Hamburg Süd helped Daikin retain its ranking as the
second largest supplier to the global refrigerated container industry.”
